003 - A Palavra de um Homem
(A Man's Word)
Three boys try to steal from Keiko on a street. Yusuke, as a ghost, can do nothing to protect her, and he feels helpless. But Kuwabara and his gang — Sayamura, Okubo and Kirishima — show up and beat up the robbers.
Kuwabara and his friends are reprehended by a manipulative teacher who threatens to cancel Okubo's license to work if any of the four boys gets into another fight in the next two weeks. Since Okubo's family depends on his work, Kuwabara agrees to the deal.
In
his way back home, the three robbers ambush Kuwabara, who tries to escape
to keep his part on the deal. But when he hears the robbers calling him
a coward, he changes his mind and comes back, telling the robbers that
they can beat him all they want; he won't run or react. The teacher, who
had followed Kuwabara, watches the scene in stupefaction, prying from
a distance. Yusuke and Botan, levitating in their ethereal forms, are
just as shocked, watching Kuwabara being cowardly beaten by the three
robbers.
The day after the teacher adds a new clause to the deal: Kuwabara and his friends must all do well in the next test. None of them are bright students (specially Kuwabara, whose grades are even worse than Yusuke's), so they'll all have to study hard.
But Kuwabara has lots of enemies. In the library, as he looked for books to study, a group of them appears. Again Kuwabara refuses to run or react, and he's beaten up again.
When Okubo sees the poor state Kuwabara was left after the beatings, he begs him to give up, since he knows Kuwabara is doing it mainly for him. But Kuwabara refuses to capitulate: "Oh, this was nothing compared to Yusuke's punch," he laughs. Yusuke, of course, is witnessing it all, and is deeply touched by his old rival's courage.
At
night, Yusuke sees that Kuwabara has fallen asleep on the books. So Yusuke
enters his dream and helps him to study.
The morning of the test, yet another group of boys plan to attack Kuwabara. Chasing him, they run into two girls. One of them, named Masako, is knocked down and bangs her head on a wall, passing out. Yusuke is afraid that if Kuwabara is beaten up once more, he won't be able to do the test for which he studied so hard. So he enters Masako's body and chases after the boys, whacking them all down easily. Kuwabara, worried about the test, doesn't even notice the commotion behind him and goes straight to school. When Yusuke leaves her body, Masako stares in shock at the boys knocked down at her feet.
Kuwabara succeeds in the test. The teacher is furious, but Iwamoto-sensei offers him a solution: he erases one of Kuwabara's answers. The teacher returns the test to Kuwabara, saying he flunked it and that Okubo's license to work is revoked.
Noticing the fraud, Kuwabara threatens to sock the teacher, but Yusuke, still ethereal, holds his fist, warning him that if he punches the teacher he will be signing his expelling from the school.
Kuwabara "hears" him, and lets the teacher go. But Takenaka-sensei, witness of the fraud and also of this last scene, intervenes with severity and demands that the teacher correct Kuwabara's grade.
When Okubo tells Kuwabara that they had succeeded in the test and that his license was revalidated, Kuwabara smiled to the sky, right in the direction where the ethereal Yusuke and Botan were levitating, and thanked.
