In the front of the hotel, Kuwabara paces nervously, wondering where Yusuke might have gone. The girls arrive from their stroll in the forest and he greets them as "Yukina-san and her escorts", receiving a reproachful - and very strong - slap from his older sister.

He tells them that Yusuke ran off into the forest and that Genkai disappeared as well; he decides to go look for them.

Yusuke runs as fast as he can, looking for the source of Toguro's dark, heavy energy.

Back to the present, the fight begins. Genkai punches his arm with a ki-wrapped fist, making a hole right beneath the shoulder. But he manages to hit her too, snatching a blood-covered strip of her tunic. "What I really wanted was to snatch your heart out," he says.

Tired, Genkai falls on her knees. Toguro doesn't seem to feel any pain, and summons 80% of his power. The arm is healed, his muscles grow to fantastic proportions. In different parts of the forest, Hiei, Kurama and Kuwabara sense the dreadful ki.

The transformation is complete: "Only four people saw me this way," says Toguro. "My brother, Bui, Karasu... and you. But you'll be dead soon." He attacks her with a red burst of energy that comes from his right hand; Genkai jumps out of the way, but falls on the ground. He tries to punch her but she jumps again; he hits the ground instead, opening a giant crater.

Still in the air, Genkai sends a Reigan-like ball of ki in his direction. He stops it with his left hand. "Is that all?" he asks mockingly. "I shouldn't have waited all this long until you found your successor. I should have killed you when you were at your best. You were so strong and beautiful... You're not Genkai! You're nothing but bones and skin, and should be thrown in the trash!"

"I'm still Genkai!" she counters. "You think it'll be easy to kill me?"

"You should thank me," says Toguro. "You'll die at the hands of someone of your past." He runs towards her.

Genkai focus her last ki. "I want power," she says to herself. "But a different power from Toguro's." She turns into her younger self. "It doesn't matter if I die, as long as I can at least make him understand."

Their powers collide. Genkai falls, a pool of blood forming beneath her. Yusuke is there.

"You're late," says Toguro.

In a blink of an eye, Yusuke is on his knees beside Genkai, taking the old shihan in his arms. Toguro is pleased with the boy's speed.

Yusuke tries to reassure Genkai, saying that he'll take her to his friends and that Kurama will heal her. "I'm going to die," she replies calmly. "I was ready for this; I knew it would happen since that day..." She tells him about the night when Toguro's messengers went to her temple and invited her for the Dark Tournament. She had refused at first, saying that Toguro knew she had promised never take part again in the competition she had won 50 years ago. But she changed her mind when she learned that Yusuke and also Kurama and Hiei have been invited as well. "That day, knowing that I'd face him again after 50 years, I acknowledged my death."

Yusuke is shocked to learn Toguro and Genkai had been partners; Toguro confirms it and adds, "I gave up my human life to become a youkai. I chose this path so I could become stronger and stronger." That had been his Champion's Wish, granted to him when his team won the Dark Tournament half a century before; but all his teammates had been against it.

Genkai urges her pupil not to follow Toguro's footsteps: "All humans must face Time...Toguro ran away from that battle. He gave up everything... his pride, his soul, his friends... Don't do this, Yusuke. You are never alone... You'll always have someone to fight for..."

With that, Genkai-shihan dies.

"If Genkai's successor had showed up before, I wouldn't have had to look at this old ugly figure," says Toguro. "There are only two paths for a fighter: get stronger or die. When she made her choice, she died for me."

Yusuke attacks Toguro with the might of his fury and indignation; but Toguro holds the ki-reinforced punch with his hand and socks Urameshi's face. Yusuke is thrown far, far away, breaking dozens of trees in the way. When he finally lands against a thicker tree, his face is badly swollen.

Toguro's fingers are wounded and twisted, but he's satisfied. Urameshi's powers are growing and soon Toguro will have the chance to use 100% of his power.

In the hotel, Puu is crying. Keiko tries to comfort him and comments that Botan is also sad for some reason. Shizuru smokes her cigarette in silence. Botan is crying in the bathroom, muffling the sounds of her sobs by opening the tap of the sink. Hiei, on a rock by the sea, and Kurama, in a clearing in the forest, are sad and quiet. Kuwabara, still looking for Yusuke, wonders about the strong energies he felt and that vanished just now.

Devastated, Yusuke remembers scenes of the training he received from Genkai and their constant arguments. He gets on his feet and punches the tree behind him until he cuts it in half. "I won't forgive you, Toguro!"
