Hogwarts Owlery
23 November, 1976, 11:45 p.m.

My Dearest Mr Padfoot,

As the night grows from an innocent child into a sour woman, I find myself missing you madly, to the point of physical pain. More specifically, your absence hits me with an atrocious pang in my back.

You miserable double-crosser, why the hell am I up here scrubbing owl droppings off the floor while you sleep with the angels in the comfort of your own bed? (You ARE in your own bed, aren't you?) Charming the tapestries in the Southeast Turret was your clever idea in the first place. How come only I got caught?

There's only one good thing about my present situation. Our most beloved Mrs Norris naively attempted to find something still edible in one of the numerous mortal remains of the brave mice that involuntarily sacrificed their lives to the prosperity of our inestimable system of long (or, occasionally, extremely short) distance communications. She got sick on my shoes—that's not the good thing—and Filch had to take her to the hospital wing and leave me alone—THAT'S the good thing—, locked inside the owlery—not remotely a good thing—in the company of many owls that can fly to the Gryffindor Tower and keep you awake—a thought I consider immensely satisfying, since it's your bloody fault that I'm here, abandoned and suffering.

Oh, and please, since you're awake anyway, write me back to tell me if Mr Wormtail is safe and sound in his bed. Or in anyone's bed, for that matter (but that would be too much to hope for, wouldn't it?). All these mice bones are hammering my head with the most disgusting thoughts. It'd be just like him to be involuntarily brave and land up as the sacrificial virgin...

And whatever you say, keep Lily out of this.

          Your partner-in-crime, alone-in-detention,

  Prongs
